Dorothea Mackellar’s My Country is one of Australia’s most widely recited and beloved poems. Reflective of the author’s great love of the Australian landscape, the poem has become one of the most recognised and celebrated pieces of Australian poetry ever written.
In 1904, after spending an extended period abroad in London, and feeling homesick for Australia, Dorothea began writing My Country. Several re-writes later, the poem was published in The Spectator in London in 1908, under its original title, Core of My Heart.
The coin is struck by The Perth Mint from 1oz of 99.9% pure silver in proof quality.
The coin's reverse depicts a colour image of a thorny devil lizard in the drought-stricken desert with storm clouds gathering in the background. The design includes the inscription I LOVE A SUNBURNT COUNTRY…OF DROUGHTS AND FLOODING RAINS and The Perth Mint’s ‘P’ mintmark.
This coin is issued as legal tender under the Australian Currency Act 1965 and features the Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, the monetary denomination, and the 2015 year-date, on the obverse.
The Perth Mint will release no more than 4,250 in this packaging of the Sunburnt Country- Of droughts and flooding rains 2015 1oz Silver Proof Rectangle Coin, from a maximum mintage of 5,000.
The coin is housed in a clear latex display case with a black frame, packaged within a beautifully illustrated shipper and accompanied by a numbered Certificate of Authenticity.

Mackellar was born in 1885 in Point Piper, Sydney, the third of four children, and the only girl born to Doctor Charles Mackellar and his wife Marion. From an early age, young Dorothea had a keen interest in poetry and story-telling, and had many of her poems and novels published throughout her lifetime.
Dorothea’s descriptive line ‘of droughts and flooding rains’ reflects the extreme weather conditions of a country whose land mass consists of nearly 20 per cent desert, and is second only to Antarctica as the driest continent in the world.
