    Description

This auction is for an exquisite vintage 43" Japanese necklace with 60 handmade Ojime beads.  Ojime beads are small treasures of Japanese art made to adjust the cords with Inro & Netsuke worn with kimonos in 18th to 19th century Japan.  Ojime beads were made in many materials including gold, silver, iron, lacquer, glass, cloisonne, wood, resin and composition material.  Ojime beads are highly sought and prized by collectors worldwide.
These ojime beads were collected and made into a necklace by a Japanese antique dealer years ago.  I purchased the necklace at a San Francisco Antique Show in around 1985 and it was vintage at that time.  Genuine ojime beads made into necklaces are difficult to find because so many individual beads must be collected for a necklace (this necklace has 60 individual ojime beads).  I have collected ojime beads for more than 50 years and am fortunate to have several necklaces as well as many individual beads.  These beautiful ojime beads are not antique but are a traditional design of various materials and certainly old.
The colors in the necklace include beige, black, brown, white, red, green and orange.  The materials in the ojime beads include lacquer, glass, composition and oxen bovine bone.  Most of the exquisite ojime beads are hand carved.  The beads are primarily round with three smiling figural accent beads.  The beads vary in size for an interesting and appealing look.  The beads are strung on some type of string with no closure.  It is easy to slip the 43" necklace over your head to wear.
The necklace is in excellent vintage condition with expected wear.  The necklace may require new stringing at some point since the string is old.  There could be scratches and wear on individual beads.  I found one metal liner that has slipped out of a bead but that is the only wear I found.  It can slide back into the bead when the necklace is worn.  It is not uncommon to find cracks and chips in old ojime beads so these beads are in great condition.  I did not wear the necklace very often and it has been carefully stored away for at least 15 years.
